Military Tattoos

Summer 2012 -- Dates TBD

Fort McHenry NM&HS

A tattoo is the military bugle call sounded shortly before Taps each evening.  The evening twilight tattoo ceremony at Fort McHenry is the oldest tradition in Baltimore. It has been taking place since the fort was garrisoned in 1799.  Over 200 years old, the ceremony involves flags, military music and precision marching. The Fort McHenry tattoos usually feature the 1814 Fort McHenry Guard together with guest units, usually U.S. Army, Navy, or Marines.

Fort McHenry generally holds two to three tattoo ceremonies each summer.

Star-Spangled Spectacular

Saturday, September 8, 2012

5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Fort McHenry NM&HS

Celebrate the successful defense of Fort McHenry and Baltimore from British invasion in 1814 by joining the Friends in a private tent in the shadow of the star fort for an impressive buffet dinner featuring mouth-watering pit beef and turkey, tasty oysters, delicious side dishes, and luscious desserts, as well as beer and wine.  Watch the National Park Service's ceremony honoring the defenders of Fort McHenry, past and present, as you mingle with state and local leaders and living history reenactors.  Cap the night off with a front row seat for a spectacular fireworks display over the historic star fort.  Contributions received by the Friends for this event support the activities of the Star-Spangled Banner Weekend, Young Defenders’ Day, and year-round, hands-on education programming at Fort McHenry.

The Star-Spangled Spectacular is a part of Fort McHenry's Star-Spangled Weekend, to be held September 7, 8, and 9, 2012.  The Star-Spangled Banner Weekend honors Defenders’ Day, Baltimore’s oldest holiday commemorating the bombardment of Fort McHenry and the writing of our National Anthem. Weekend activities are free to the public. On Friday evening, the public celebration starts with a parade of re-enactors marching from the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House to the Inner Harbor where a special ceremony will take place. The re-enactors will board sailing boats and return with the 30’ x 42’ replica flag to Fort McHenry. Saturday and Sunday daytime activities at the Fort will include a dress parade, flag raisings, cannon firing demonstrations, and presentations by re-enactors and living history interpreters. The Saturday evening public program will begin approximately 6:00 p.m. and feature tactical demonstrations, traditional music, and a re-enactment of the bombardment of the Fort. The highlight of Saturday evening will be a spectacular fireworks display commemorating the bombardment of the Fort and the defense of Baltimore.
